Wye Valley 01

As part of the regeneration strategy for the Polish Scouting centre in St. Briavels, Gloucestershire, an existing coach house and store has been converted into a site manager’s accommodation.

As a building located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to a key wildlife site, in order to obtain planning consent, the design and construction had to be developed to include bat protection measures.

For a long period, this neglected building was used as an equipment store leaving it in a poor condition and in need of comprehensive alterations including tanking below ground areas and making significant structural alterations. The ground and first floor forms the manager’s accommodation comprising a kitchen/dining and living room and a bedroom and bathroom. An open tread stair connects the living room to a main bedroom on the first floor. The lower-ground floor is made up of equipment stores and a workshop.

With a challengingly low budget, the design respects the language and materials of the existing envelope. Where suitable, materials have been recycled in combination with modern techniques and materials used to complete the conversion and improve its overall environmental performance.
